There will be ten days of feasting on the menu as the Borders Banquet gets underway tomorrow. Billed as ‘Home cooking for Homecoming’ the event coincides with the nationwide celebrations marking the end of the year of Homecoming.

The event kicks off with the Hawick Farmers’ Market tomorrow and then, over the weekend, there will be a cookery demonstration at Paxton House using recipes from Elizabeth Cleland’s book An Easy Method of Cookery, said to be the oldest recipe book printed in Scotland. The demos will take place in the restored Georgian kitchens at Paxton House where Cleland herself was once based.

The book is on Google here and if you ever wondered how to roast a tongue and udder or make jelly broth for a consumptive then look no further.

Come the 28th of November, Sue Lawrence will be giving a cookery demo using produce from the Kelso Farmers’ Market. That weekend also sees the Traquair Christmas Fair complete with a scavenger hunt, stalls and roasted chestnuts.

Throughout the entire festival, restaurants across the region will be offering up special menus and dining events. The Horseshoe Inn at Eddlestone, a 5pm member, will be hosting a six course tasting menu on the 25th of November.
