Inside the Spice Pavilion

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Glasgow restaurant India Fifty Seven has joined 5pm, we bring you news of a recently opened Indian restaurant in Edinburgh.

The Spice Pavilion Indian Restaurant has opened in the Dundas Street basement site which was previously inhabited by the Walima Moroccan restaurant.

They describe their decor as inspired  by the Colonial Era while the food is labeled as North West Indian Frontier style. Judging by the menu, this means that while there are plenty of familiar jalfrezies, kormas and, of course, a chicken tikka massala option on offer, there are also some slightly less familiar dishes.

As well as a chicken dish cooked with saffron gravy, the chef’s specialities include a chicken curry finished with cheese and a southern Indian dish of ‘hot chicken’ which lists a ‘touch of vinegar’ among the ingredients and is, perhaps, the chef’s take on the famous vindaloo.

Writing in the Edinburgh Spotlight blog, Miss Edinburgh seemed chuffed with the Spice Pavilion and, as well as praising the food, notes that at least one of the members of staff speaks fluent Italian. A skill which could make a meal at the Spice Pavilion a very cosmopolitan occasion.

The new venture joins a fairly competitive market. If you fancy a curry in Edinburgh and want to benefit from a 5pm deal then just set the 5pm restaurant browser to Edinburgh, scroll down to Indian cuisine and take your choice.
