Curry: Glasgow does it best

Congratulations to Glasgow’s top curry chefs who scooped the Curry Capital of Britain Award for Glasgow yesterday.

The competition has run eight times since it started in 2001 and this win means that Glasgow’s best rogan josh jockeys have taken the crown no fewer than four times.

The Glasgow team triumphed over the best balti-boilers of Bradford and a crack squad from Wolverhampton who battled under the slogan: 2010 is the year that curry comes home.

The Glasgow restaurants chosen by the public to represent the city were Mr Singh’s India, Balbirs, Koolba and the Mother India Cafe.

Mr Singh’s and Koolba are 5pm members although, if you want a 5pm deal on one of the other two restaurants, you might want to try the Wee Curry Shop, a 5pm restaurant and sister operation to the mighty Mother India outlets.

Mr Singh’s has been blogging about the win here.

Peter Grove, the awards founder and organiser said, ‘The thirteen experienced judges from all round the country wish it to be known that their job was made very difficult due to the very high standard of team restaurants and general competition this year.

‘Bradford was deemed to have the most innovative submission and newcomers Wolverhampton deserve special mention for a tremendous first time showing. However Glasgow was judged to be the winner for the fourth time by just 2 points for an outstanding team effort from all parties co-ordinated by the Council and supported by the Scottish media.’

We also have a quote from Trampy and the Tramp of the infamous Trampy and the Tramp’s Glasgow of Curry blog.

Glasgow’s top curry commentators and part of the team that won the title of this year’s Curry Lover of the Year Award, the duo had this to say about their hometown’s famous victory:

‘Trampy and The Tramp salute everyone involved in Glasgow’s successful bid to be crowned Curry Capital 2010 – especially the restaurant team of Balbir’s, KoolBa, Mr Singh’s and Mother India’s Cafe. Just typing those names is making our mouths water. That’s a classy, spicy squad that cannae be beat.

As the west coast’s most enthusiastic currynauts, we were never really in any doubt that Glasgow could reclaim the title and any rumours that we had a tenner on Bradford to win are completely unfounded.

Our Curry Lovers Of The Year-winning blog was briefly mentioned in the official bid document, but it would be wrong for us to take any credit.

Glasgow did win by just two points though.

Just sayin’.’
