Mithas: not your run of the mill Indian

Last year, Glasgow may have just been pipped at the post for the Curry Capital of the Year Award while Edinburgh, the only other Scottish city in the final, trailed in fifth place.

However, this doesn’t mean that the capital’s curry scene is moribund.

Mithas in Leith has livened things up by announcing that they are to invite well known guest chefs in to their kitchens for one off evening events.

Roy Brett of Ondine will be hitting the spice trail on Sunday 22nd January and Nick Nairn will be the next to toss the turmeric on Sunday 26th February.

Places are available on a first come, first served basis and the chefs will be serving Mithas’ menu along with a couple of their own surprises.

Since launching last year with the stated intention of winning a Michelin star, Mithas has certainly shaken up Edinburgh’s world of curry.

Their new approach to Indian food has led to them being nominated as finalists for the Indian Restaurant of the Year Award at the Scottish Restaurant Awards which will be held in Glasgow at the end of February.

The pop-up chef idea is already proving popular with Edinburgh diners.

Aoife Behan, the woman behind My Home Supper Club, recently launched her Burgher Burger guerilla dining concept at which well known chefs set up shop in a caff for the night and show what they can do with the humble burger.

The first event, held at Now cafe in February with Cafe St Honore’s Neil Forbes at the helm, sold out within minutes.

The next Burgher Burger night, to be held on Monday 5th March at an as yet undisclosed location in Leith, will star Tony Singh and his bhangra burgers.
