The Locavore hub on Skirving Street

Interesting times in Glasgow’s Southside where Locavore has just launched.

A not-for-profit organisation, Locavore is dedicated to creating sustainable local food economies.

Currently, they operate from 42 Skirving Street which hosts a community kitchen and local food shop. Typical projects include making a community kitchen garden in a local tenement backyard or creating ‘edible platforms’ at Southside rail stations.

The kitchen is being used to hold workshops in using local and seasonal ingredients. So activities might include lessons in jam making or looking at how to cook wild foods.

As well as producing some items for sale within the shop, the organisers also sell goods from suppliers such as Johnny’s Garden honey (produced in Glasgow), Waulkmill Cider (Scotland only producer of apple juice), Hebridean Sea Salt (Scotland’s only sea salt producer), Edenmill (sausages and meat from Blanefield) and Scottish organic vegetable growers.

If you grow your own veg or produce other food, they are open to offers of bartering.

Unlike a conventional business, all profits made go back into funding local food projects.
