DSC00597As well as pics of Sean Connery and Robert De Niro in the window, Ciao Roma has another way of drawing in customers: the ice cream display in the shop window.

Usually showing at least 22 different flavours, the display unit is an eye-catching burst of colour. Nor is it just a good looking selection of gelato.

Champion ice cream

For the last three years running, Ciao Roma’s ice cream has been judged the Champion Ice Cream at the Royal Highland Show.

It’s only ever made by Fabio Martone and they supply nobody else except for their sister restaurant, Bar Italia on Lothian Road.

Hazelnut and sea salt caramel are two of the most popular flavours at the moment but the Nutella is also a big seller.

Sea buckthorn

Among the more unusual flavours is a surprisingly tasty whisky and orange combo while the sea buckthorn sorbet is mouth-wateringly refreshing.

For a real taste of Italy, try the mascarpone and balsamic flavour.

Ciao Roma serves a lot of ice cream to tourists during the peak summer months. Curiously, most nationalities seem to have no stand out favourites. Except for Chinese visitors who love the pistachio and mango flavours.

Restaurant diners are welcome to order scoops of ice cream or they can tackle the tremendous range of banana splits, cups and coppa on offer.

The house Coppa Martone features banoffee pie and vanilla ice cream; a julienne of home made crepes; shortbread crumble; fresh banana; maple syrup and fresh whipped cream.

As you might imagine, it’s a big hit with kids, both the small and large varieties.

Take a look at some of their sundaes and read Ciao Roma’s dessert menu here.

5pm Dining offer – £14.50 for 2 courses on pre theatre menu available from Ciao Roma here.
