Gordon Street Coffee: roasts and blends its own beans.
Gordon Street Coffee: roasts and blends its own beans.

Some people love coffee. Others prefer tea. Fair enough. It’s just that the 5pm Dining blog is not sure that the latter should be trusted.

We do trust the good people at Gordon Street Coffee.  Located by the entrance to Central Station, the coffee bar opened earlier this year.

What makes them stand out from the crowd is that Gordon Street Coffee is the only shop in the city centre to roast its own blend – the Glasgow Roast.

Bold and bright blend

Beans mean flavour at Gordon Street Coffee.
Beans mean flavour at Gordon Street Coffee.

Created using specially selected beans, chosen by Gordon Street Coffee’s Master Roaster John Gartly, the Glasgow Roast celebrates the city’s historical trading links with India, Africa and the Americas.

As the name implies, it embodies the bold and bright characteristics that the city and its people are renowned for.

It is roasted in-house twice weekly, and customers can see the whole process in action.

In addition to the Glasgow Roast, Gordon Street Coffee also offers a house blend consisting of three beans from South America and Africa. A medium roast coffee, the house blend delivers a fruity flavour rich in chocolate.

The blends are made from various combinations of Kenyan, Indian, Brazilian and Guatemalan beans, each with their own distinct flavour.

The Kenyan beans boast powerful berry and wine-like flavour while Indian beans add body, richness and depth to the final blend. The Brazilian beans give a distinct hint of chocolate and the Guatemalan beans contribute body, fruitiness and aroma.

Build your own blend

It’s a skilled process and one which you can try with this rather nifty build your own blend competition. Just in time for Christmas, this is your chance to win a personalised coffee blend from Gordon Street Coffee.

The winner will join Master Roaster John Gartly on a Wednesday evening to create their very own coffee blend from any combination of beans.

After helping John in the roasting and grinding process, the winner will be presented with a four kilo bag of your personalised blend. Enjoy it yourself or give out smaller bags as a unique Christmas gift.

Even if you don’t win, visitors are welcome to drop by Gordon Street Coffee each Wednesday night and learn about the process as John prepares the next week’s Glasgow Roast.
