Chia seeds: mouthwatering?
Chia seeds: mouthwatering?

The 5pm Dining blog is busy compiling its 2014 in food blogs. Our annual look back at Scotland’s restaurant scene, it’s a comprehensive examination of the year’s big openings and trends.

With a fair wind, we hope to have the first instalment rolled out on Friday. Or maybe Monday as it’s taking longer than anticipated.

Try as we might though, it’s not quite as comprehensive as Google’s Year in Search round-up.

Twerking tips

Want to know the most searched for celebrity death or the top tip for twerking? Go to Google.

Amusingly, ‘how to kiss’ was top of the ‘how to’ lists in many UK cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I’m not sure what this tells us but ‘how to crochet’ was tops in Manchester while ‘how to shuffle’ was most popular in Belfast. ‘How to paraphrase’ topped the charts in Oxford.

As ever, it’s also fascinating to see what food facts people were searching for.

Quinoa down, goji up

Last year, apparently, kale and quinoa were all the rage. In 2014, people were desperate to find out about chia seeds and goji berries.

Chinese food and Indian food dominated the search lists although that is hardly surprising given the two countries’ vast populations. To its eternal credit, French food was the third most searched for national cuisine.

Remarkably, more people searched for pizza than they did for World Cup.

Less surprisingly, a certain Mr Oliver was the most searched for sleb chef. Chocolate cake and burgers were the on-trend foods of the year.
