The 5pm Dining blog has long had a soft spot for wine dinners and lunches. Apart from the obvious attractions of food and wine, they are almost always fun events where you can learn a lot from the actual people who make the wines. There are some interesting events coming up on the horizon in Edinburgh.

Sparkling supper

On Monday 2nd March, the Californian restaurant Calistoga is hosting a sparkling supper with representatives from the Domaine Carneros winery in Napa. Owned and established by the Taittinger Champagne House, the Californian company specialises in making méthode Champenoise style wines from Pinot Noir grapes. Tickets for the event are £35 a head and include a two course dinner with coffee plus tastings of several Domaine Carneros wines. Alternatively, you can book their two course early evening menu for £12 from their 5pm page.

Yealands wine lunch

Up in the Old Town, our friends at Hotel du Vin have two events this month. On Saturday 7th March, Yealands Estate will be bringing the wines of Marlborough, New Zealand to Edinburgh. From Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot Noir, some of the estate’s most interesting wines will be paired with a three course lunch. The event starts at 1pm and costs £45 a head.

Innis & Gunn lunch

Fast forward to Saturday 21st March and Innis & Gunn brewers will be at Hotel du Vin for a three course beer lunch starting at 1pm. Each course will be paired with an Innis & Gunn speciality beer with the pairings explained by the brewer’s Claire McPherson. We’re not going to try and second guess the menu but we will point out that Claire’s Twitter account recently noted that she was sampling beer-glazed ribs as possible menu items for the lunch.
