Congratulations are due to Glasgow seafood restaurant Gamba and their customers. Together they have raised over four and a half thousand pounds for The Fishermen’s Mission in Scotland.

Last week, the award-winning seafood restaurant donated £4,557 to The Fishermen’s Mission after a six-month fundraising drive. Chef patron Derek Marshall handed a checque over to Paula Daly, the manager of the Mission’s centre at Troon docks.

Between May and October last year, charitable diners generously added £1 to their bill each time they dined at the seafood restaurant.

Charity dinner

Early November then saw staff from the restaurant giving their time for free to host a charity dinner in the restaurant. MacCallums of Troon donated the seafood for the evening.

Fishing remains the most dangerous peacetime occupation in the UK. With staff all around the coastline, The Fishermen’s Mission is there to offer practical, financial and welfare support to both active and retired fishermen.

The Scottish Fishermen’s Mission centre in Troon looks after fishermen coming in to ports from Annan in the south, along the coast to Stranraer, and up as far as Greenock.

With the money raised by Gamba, Scottish fishermen in the West Coast will benefit from the centre investing in more life-saving equipment including personal flotation devices (lifejackets), oilskins, boots and emergency food supplies.

Supporting Scottish fishermen

Talking about fundraising for the Fisherman’s Mission, Gamba’s Derek Marshall, says:

‘We’re delighted that we managed to raise an impressive figure for the Fishermen’s Mission. The work they do is integral to helping fishermen sustain a living when catches are low. Even right now it’s been difficult to catch lobster and the Mission is there to support these men that risk their lives to fish in all weather conditions.

‘We wanted to fundraise for them as they are often overlooked as a charity. The Scottish fishing industry provides high quality seafood to many of the world’s most important markets, and their dedicated charity deserves the help and support to provide care for our fishermen in the community.’
