Portobello: Edinburgh's answer to Vegas.
Portobello: Edinburgh’s answer to Vegas.

The sun has got his hat on. Hip! Hip! Hip hip hooray!

Few things make the 5pm Dining blog smile quite as much as sunshine does. Especially when there is the promise of more sunny days to come.

Of course, combine sunny weather with new restaurant openings and we are in clover.

Paradise in Porty

All of which is a roundabout way of saying ‘Hello!’ to The Portobello Palm Tree,  a new bar, grill, beer garden and, uh, Caribbean beach hut which is finding its feet on Portobello High Street.

Formerly The Three Monkeys, the new venture is from the same team as the well funky Lioness of Leith.

On sunny days, much of the focus will be on the beer garden, home to the eponymous palm tree.

As well as boozy slush puppies, the attractions include street food, some of which is cooked on the wood-fired pizza oven.

For Easter weekend, the grill menu featured options such as pork marinated in mango, chilli, lime and ginger; Moroccan-spiced chicken thighs and mixed Med veg.

These could be served with sides and sauces such as Jamaican slaw and garlic yoghurt sauce.

Anyway, the 5pm Dining blog somehow managed to miss out on lunch before writing this post so we’re going to have to stop there in case we gnaw our fingers off.

Gin and apple slush puppies; hot, spicy food fresh off the grill and wood-fired pizza – all dished up in the totally tropical paradise of Porty.

What’s not to like?
