This 5pm Dining blog writer has often been inspired by beer. Unfortunately, in the cold light of day, my beer-fuelled bright ideas from the night before don’t usually stand up to much scrutiny.

Happily, a group of graduates from The Glasgow School of Art have made rather more constructive use of beer’s ability to inspire.

To celebrate its first birthday, Drygate – the UK’s first experiential craft brewery – invited GSA graduates from all over the world to create artwork inspired by beer and brewing in Glasgow.

Limited edition beer

Prints from six chosen artists have been used to make limited edition, signed wrappers for Drygate’s birthday beer – APEX: Peak 1.

The GSA graduates taking part in the collaboration include Matthew Bainbridge whose work features emojis and recognisable faces from popular culture; artist Rae-Yun Song who uses her surreal style to interpret everyday scenarios and painter Fran Caballero who drew inspiration from cartoons and classical still life to create his Drygate submission.

Created by Drygate’s collective of three young brewers, APEX: Peak 1 is a 7.3% ABV saison-hybrid. Just 2,400 bottles of the have been produced and they will retail at £10 a bottle.

The official unveiling of the art will act as the centrepiece to Drygate’s Birthday Weekender taking place on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th May. The event, which is in aid of Nordoff-Robbins, is free and open to all.

DJ sets

On Friday, from 7pm, visitors are welcome in the event space and beer hall where the six pieces of artwork will be unveiled.

Guests will be able to enjoy a craft beer, cider or gin from the ‘friends of Drygate’ guest bar, with the likes of Thistly Cross Cider, West, Edinburgh Gin, Tempest Brew Co, Six Degrees North, Tap Out, Williams Bros and Fallen Brewing Company in attendance.

There will be DJ sets from Intergalactic Funk Smugglers and friends from 9pm to close.

On Saturday, from 3pm to 6pm, Guests can peruse art, records, clothing and crafts from sellers such as The Glasgow School of Art, Wonkey Woolies, Brotique, Ovenbird Coffee, Chemikal Underground and SF Brand. There will also be live art from resident artist, Spencer Stearns.

From 6pm to 9pm, there will be live music from local talent Memory Man and Edgar.  From 9pm, EzUp Crew will be manning the decks.
