Slow Food Week gets underway next week. It is designed to celebrate the Slow Food movement, an international organisation whose aims are to promote food which is good, clean and fair for everyone.

There are several Slow Food Week events taking place in Edinburgh with 5pm Dining members prominent among the restaurants taking part.

Highlights include a Scottish Seafood Surprise at L’Escargot Bleu at 7pm on Tuesday 2 June. Chef patron Fred Berkmiller has yet to announce the menu but, from previous experience, we’re in safe hands.

The evening costs £22.50 (£20 for Slow Food members).

Heritage food trail

On Saturday 6th June, from 9am-2pm, Slow Food Edinburgh will be hosting a special Slow Food Week stall at Edinburgh Farmers Market, Castle Terrace.

Then, from 2pm, Slow Food Edinburgh and Edinburgh World Heritage  will be marking EWH’s new Foodie Trail with a small historic food tour following a portion of the Edinburgh trail.

On Sunday 7th June, from 5pm-7pm, Victor and Carina Contini will introduce a new Slow Food Sunday Sundae held in their Gelateria on the Royal Mile Cafe, 5-7pm.

Visitors will be able to try a cocktail or milkshake with canapé while hearing from the Contini gardener Kerry Lyall.

The talk will be followed by a Scottish strawberry, meringue and hot chocolate Sunday sundae. The event costs £15 (£12 for SF members, students and unemployed).

Future of food

Finally, on Monday 8th June, Chef Neil Forbes and the Cafe St Honore team will be looking at the future of food, the theme of Scotland’s Year of Food & Drink 2015 in the month of June.

Donald Reid will be the guest speaker. The UK’s first Masters programme in Gastronomy has been running for just over a year at Queen Margaret University in Musselburgh.

Donald, one of the lecturers on the programme, along with a current student, will introduce the course in a bit more detail, help define gastronomy, and explain its role in thinking about the future of food.

The evening will cost £15 (£12.50 Slow Food members) for a main course and a glass of wine, beer or non-alcoholic drink. Dessert is an additional £2.50.
