Restaurants with a South American theme have been increasingly fashionable in London for a couple of years now.

With the recent opening of Brazilliant Churrascuria and Steakhouse on Sauchiehall Street, it seems that a similar trend is gathering steam in Glasgow.

Latin American fashion

A new sign-up with 5pm Dining, Brazilliant joins well established Latin American bars and restaurants such as Boteco do Brasil, Tropeiro and Viva Brazil.

More recent arrivals include Mango and Las Iguanas. If we count Caribbean restaurants then we should also mention the Rum Shack, Fire In Babylon and Sugar Dumplin’.

Edinburgh also has newish branches of Las Iguanas and Boteco do Brasil as well as veteran venues such as Brazilian Sensation, Los Argentinos and Sabor Criollo.

Meat feast

At Brazilliant, it’s all about the barbecued meat. At lunch, they serve eight different types and cuts of meat. At dinner, the chefs sear fifteen different cuts and types of meat.

It’s a rodizio restaurant which means that diners can eat as much as they want for a set price. There is a salad bar and a hot plate buffet for those who quail at the thought of a pure meat feast.

Caipirinha cocktails made with cachaca spirit will help get the party underway.

This scribbler was lucky enough to go to Argentina a few years back and the Argentinean devotion to meat, especially beef, was awe-inspiring.

It usually seemed as though no meal was complete without meat and the only carne that counted was beef.

Chicken and pork seemed to be classed as vegetables or garnish rather than real meat.
