Whisky flavoured films, ice cream and, er, whisky at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

While the much trumpeted heat wave has yet to arrive, it’s deffo summer.

How can we be so sure?

Easy, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh has launched a range of Ice Dream Drams – twelve flavours of whisky ice cream made with Society single cask whiskies; all created by renowned Edinburgh ice cream makers, S. Luca.

If there are new ice creams being developed then it must be summer. And with whisky being so deliciously warming, these Ice Dream Drams sound perfect for the often chilly Scottish summer.

Whisky ice cream

The ice creams feature typical SWMS whisky flavour profiles such as oily and coastal; spicy and sweet and young and spritely.

The flavours of whisky ice cream available include:

Maple Bacon Crunch – sweet syrup and smoky bacon flavours combined with peated whisky

Banana-Dram-A – banana and marshmallow ice cream made with a sweet, fruity and mellow whisky

Open to public

The ice creams have been produced to mark the fact that the Queen Street branch of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, formerly a members-only venue, is now open to the public.

Along with twelve specially chosen single malt whiskies, the whisky ice creams will be available at the soon-to-launch Twelve Tub Cinema Club – a series of film screenings being held to celebrate the news that the venue at 28 Queen Street is now welcoming non-members.

From Friday 19th June to Saturday 11 July, The North View room at the Society’s 28 Queen Street venue will be transformed into an intimate cinema, complete with bean bags, deck chairs and ushers serving whisky ice creams and drams.

Tickets cost £5 which includes the film plus one serving of whisky ice cream and whisky. Doors are at 7pm; films are at 8pm.

The films being screened all have a whisky link. They are:

The Angels’ Share – Friday 19 June,

Whisky Galore – Friday 26 June

Lost in Translation – Saturday 27 June

Inglourious Basterds – Thursday 2 July

Barfly – Friday 3 July

Withnail & I – Friday 10 July

Casablanca – Saturday 11 July

Classic whisky films

Helen Stewart, UK brand manager for The Society, said:

‘Members have already discovered the joys of the Society and opening of 28 Queen Street permanently for everyone is a great opportunity for others to enjoy the amazing array of whisky we have on offer. At the Twelve Tub Cinema Club events, guests can enjoy some classic whisky films while sampling our whiskies and the amazing array of whisky ice creams created by S. Luca.’

The Society’s other venue in Edinburgh, The Vaults in Leith, will continue to operate as a members-only venue.
