The 5pm Dining blog keeps on hearing good things about Dukes Bar on Old Dumbarton Road.

Handy for Kelvingrove, it has been through several incarnations since first opening way back in 1877.

Having recently come under new management (check the piano and disco ball), it’s developing a neat reputation for its avant garde music events.

Back in February, the bar hosted an homage to Kate Bush. Assorted local musicians, including Duglas from the BMX Bandits and Markee de Saw, took to the mic to perform their own versions of La Bush’s songs.

Busking tour

There is a similar event on Thursday 2nd July when the bar will be putting on an evening dedicated to The Clash.

Bizarre as it may seem, the iconic punk band played at Dukes thirty years ago as part of their final busking tour.Dukes Bar Clash

The Evening Times ran a good piece about the gig last year.

The spirit of ’85 will be revived at the concert at Dukes next Thursday. Angus McIntyre of The Kaisers will be curating the event. If the Kate Bush event is anything to go by, then The Clash night should be as quirky as it is fun.

Regular musical attractions at Dukes Bar include an open mic might hosted by the Two Daves on Wednesdays; all vinyl DJ Sessions on Sunday afternoons and a jazz jam courtesy of the D-Quartet on Thursdays.

Wurst dogs

The food offer is just as much fun. As well as a selection of hot dogs made with genuine German wurst sausages, the food menu includes oysters and a selection of small plates.

These change regularly but might feature black pudding croquettes served with a nettle sauce and crushed Serrano or  smoked haddock fishcake served with Cullen skink sauce and a soft poached egg.
