Summer in Scotland is always interesting. We all want to make the most of it and get out there when the sun is shining.

At the same time, it is an optimistic/foolish soul who hasn’t at least thought about a back-up plan should the weather suddenly switch to borderline state of emergency.

Some venues lend themselves more than others to capricious weather.

Set in the majestic surroundings of Bellahouston Park, the Art Lover’s Café at House for an Art Lover is perfect for a Scottish summer.

Eat al fresco

Seating up to 50, the terrace is one of the city’s best al fresco eating areas and diners can enjoy views of the house, sculptures and greenery while they bask in the sunshine.

Should the weather be less amenable, the café’s dining room seats 80.

Open daily from 10am to 5pm, with lunch served from 12pm to 4pm, the café is minimal with monochrome décor and large arched windows looking onto the stunning gardens.

If it is too wet to even contemplate looking outside then the café is also used as a year-round art gallery showing work from local artists.

Scottish produce

Chef Ian Mackie and his team have just launched a new summer menu which reflects the abundance of seasonal produce on offer.

Commenting on the menu, Chef Ian Mackie, said: ‘Scotland’s coastline and lush woodlands make us a virtual playground of produce. Whether it’s Highland salmon; West Coast scallops; tangy farmhouse cheddar from the Isle of Mull; Aberdeen Angus beef or wild garlic sourced from our garden, we want to ensure that we are using the very best ingredients.’

Earlier this week, the kitchen also launched its new afternoon tea.

Available Monday-Friday, from 3pm-4pm, it features sandwiches, fruit scone with cream and jam; chocolate brownie; fruit tartlet; frangipane slice; coconut and white chocolate slice, and a selection of teas and freshly brewed coffee.

Afternoon tea must be booked 24 hours in advance.
