T in the Park will almost certainly take the lion’s share of the headlines but the Tennent’s sponsored festival is not the only beer-fuelled event to make some noise this weekend.

Starting from noon today and running until 4.30pm on Sunday, the 2015 Scottish Real Ale Festival will be rocking Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange.

170 beers

There are some 170 beers on the list plus a dozen or so ciders and perries from Scotland and further afield.

Traditionally, the 5pm Dining blog has indulged its schoolboy sense of humour by picking out a few beers with dodgy punning names.

However, with the exception of the Foxy Blonde from Born in the Borders brewers, the seaside postcard sauce of old seems to have vanished.

There’s still a few good puns though. From the Spey Valley brewery in Keith, we liked the sound of their extra pale ale – Sunshine on Keith.

Foraged beer

Returning to the other end of the country, Born in the Borders are bringing a beer made from as yet unannounced foraged ingredients. Back when the blog was a nipper, ‘foraged beer’ was what you nicked from your Dad’s stash but times change.

Another curiosity comes from Usher’s of Edinburgh brewery. Their Ocean IPA has been at sea and aged in oak – just as traditional India Pale Ale used to be.

For a much more in-depth and knowledgeable discussion of the beer list, you might want to check out the ever excellent BeerCast blog.

The 2015 Festival will run from Thursday 9th July to Sunday 12th July. Noon to 11pm every day, with the exception of Sunday when the doors open at 12.30pm and close at 4.30pm (or when the beer runs out, whichever is sooner).

Entry is £6 (or £4 for card carrying CAMRA members). This includes a souvenir programme and badged glass (pint or half-pint) which gives free admission to all subsequent sessions on presentation of your 2015 glass.
