Calm before the storm: the dance floor at Reina.
Calm before the storm: the dance floor at Reina.

Clubbing is a distant and probably unreliable memory for this 5pm Dining blog scribbler; although we did manage an awkward little shuffle at last night’s excellent FFS concert.

Since staying up past midnight is becoming increasingly difficult, it seems unlikely that we will ever be drawn back onto the dance floor.

However, new nightclub ventures such as Glasgow’s Reina have a much higher chance than most of seeing me cross the threshold.

And no, their secret weapon is not a 90’s indie playlist.

Basement club and bar

Just launched on Hope Street, Reina is a basement club and bar with a ground level bistro.

Downstairs, the young and fashionable can bust a move (do people still bust moves?) before retiring to a booth for a refreshing cocktail.

Upstairs, those of us with a more sedentary lifestyle can sit down for lunch or dinner.

Lunch might be crispy calamari followed by penne arrabiata or beer-battered fish ‘n’ chips with apple pie and ice cream for dessert.

In the evening, among many other options, there are lamb chops with crumbled goat’s cheese, burgers, lasagne and breaded chicken breasts served with black pudding mash, seasonal veg and a pepper sauce.

Joining 5pm Dining

The house speciality is the Reina steak – an 8oz fillet steak served with a scallop and prawn skewer on a bed of onion rings.

Reina will be joining 5pm Diner in the next few days. Look out for it.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must go and turn over my Wedding Present LP.
