The Great British Menu is underway again with the tenth series now airing on the BBC. This time around, 24 chefs are competing to cook at a banquet for the centenary of the Women’s Institute.

The judges are looking for chefs who can ‘produce 21st-century dishes worthy of the custodians of first-class home cooking’.

Scotland has fielded a strong team with Jacqueline O’Donnell of The Sisters having a second crack at the competition after previously reaching the final.

She is joined by Jimmy Lee of Lychee Oriental and Graham Campbell who has just taken up the role of Head Chef at Dundee’s Castlhehill.

5pm Dining offers

Both Jak and Jimmy’s businesses are 5pm Dining restaurants and they have some sweet offers on.

At The Sisters on Kelvingrove Street, they are offering a three course set lunch for £12.

Given the chance. we would start with the crispy coated Dingwall haggis with clapshot and garlic cream sauce before moving onto the roasted Ramsay’s of Carluke ham with buttered cabbage and Colcannon tatties – a speciality of Jak.

Before going for a little siesta, we would end our lunch with the pink grapefruit sorbet with berry compote and crushed meringue.

Chilli and salt ribs

Back in the city centre, Lychee Oriental on Mitchell Street is running a set menu at £13.80 for two courses, available 4pm-7pm.

We’re thinking chilli and salt ribs or hot and sour soup followed by stir-fried beef with asparagus. Or maybe the spicy chicken with cashew nuts.

Having said that, the king prawn stir fry with ginger, onion and shallots is a classic. Book here.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes all the chefs the best of luck on Great British Menu.
