Punjabi Junction

122 -124 Leith Walk, Leith, Edinburgh, EH6 5DT

Decked out with a vintage Indian train theme, Punjabi Junction is a welcoming and cosy little cafe run by the Sikh community.

As well as home-style Punjabi cooking, this Leith Walk venture offers outside catering and cookery classes. Whether you want a quick chicken curry wrap or multi-course sit down feast, Punjabi Junction has it covered.

The all-in-one meal or Punjabi thali is always popular or diners can go a la carte and tuck into samosas, pakora, fenugreek-flavoured methi chicken, parathas stuffed with a spicy potato mix and steamed momo dumplings.

The haggis pakora are always a hit while the lamb kofta curry was given the thumbs up by Madhur Jaffery when the venerable cookbook author filmed a TV show at Punjabi Junction.

The a la carte menu is extensive, with traditional choices augmented by Thai, Singapore and Lar Chee, or little chilli, dishes. Lunch set menus offer favourites such as ribs, curries and Kung Po. The house speciality is Peking duck.

Rodi Restaurant

121 Morrison St, Haymarket, Edinburgh, EH3 8AJ

Rodi is a small and welcoming Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant towards the top of Morrison Street. The open plan charcoal grill is the star of the show and the source of much of the menu.

Diners might choose a simple dish of char grilled lamb spare ribs or opt for something more involved, like the tavuk bayti – minced chicken breast flavoured with garlic, flat leaf parsley and flaked chilli. Vegetarian dishes include the sebez guvek – potatoes, tomatoes, okra, aubergine, peppers and herbs, all baked in the oven and topped with feta cheese.

To start, there are lots of hot and cold mezze, such as the grilled peppers topped with feta cheese and the spicy Turkish sucuk sausage.

Expect engaging, friendly staff rather than reserved, formal service.
