Mumbai Mansion is changing perceptions of Indian restaurants.
Mumbai Mansion is changing perceptions of Indian restaurants.

We are always welcoming new additions to the roster of 5pm Dining restaurants. These are some of the latest Edinburgh restaurants to sign up with us.

The offers shown are available today. They change regularly so, if you have a particular restaurant that you would like to visit, it’s always worth checking back on a later date or entering different dates into the ‘show me offers’ box.

Enjoy!

The Bonnington

284 Bonnington Road, Edinburgh, EH6 5BE

A local pub, The Bonnington’s food is simple, tasty and freshly prepared and features lots of old favourites like the battered Scottish haddock with chips or haggis, neeps and tatties.

We were in recently and had a hearty bowl of bigos – Polish hunter’s stew. It was real rib-sticking stuff and perfect as the colder months begin to settle in.

Chinatown

3 Atholl Place, Edinburgh, EH3 8HP

Classic Cantonese dishes are the draw in the smart dining room of Chinatown. Steamed sea bass with fresh ginger and spring onions or beef with broccoli are among the most popular dishes.

Many would rate Chinatown as one of Edinburgh’s best Chinese restaurants and it gets glowing mentions from several local restaurant guides.

A la carte available – average price for 2 courses is £17.50

Hoolets

Mercure Edinburgh Quay, 38 Gardners Crescent, Edinburgh, EH3 8DQ

Hoolets is an old Scots word for owls. More fittingly, given the location of this new hotel at the Edinburgh Quay end of the Forth and Clyde Canal, a hoolet was also said to be the cry of the old canal boat pilots as they approached a lock.

Scottish produce and Scottish history is to the fore on the menu in this light and airy restaurant. The kitchen is unafraid of traditional Scottish comfort food favourites like stovies, and even names their version after Fountainbridge’s most famous milkman Sean Connery.

Similar inspired irreverence characterises a menu that names the vegetarian burger after Sawney Bean and offers a choice of Mary Queen of Scots or Robert the Bruce salads.

£5.95 for soup + sandwich

Hoolets has a contemporary decor and offers dishes with a definite Scottish flavour.

Kampung Ali

97-101 Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 9QG

With its wooden tables and vibrant city skyline decor, Kampung Ali is an elegant variation on its sister establishment on the Southside. Authentic Malaysian cuisine is the secret of its popularity, with dishes created by Peter Lee, the latest in a long family line of innovative chefs.

The big bowls of soupy noodles are a fantastic winter warmer while dishes like the steamed sea bass with spicy bean sauce offer lighter options. We have a soft spot for the nasi goreng – the classic, rice-based, Indonesian breakfast dish.

Mia Restaurant

96 Dalry Road, Edinburgh, EH11 2AX

Launched towards the end of 2013, Mia is a family-run Italian restaurant in West Edinburgh. A bright, contemporary and welcoming space, Mia serves fresh, Italian dishes.

The zuppa di pesce, or seafood and shellfish broth, served with toasted bread comes highly recommended. The regular regional cuisine dinners are always very popular.

This is what a recent diner had to say of Mia:

‘Lovely meal. Good food, fair size portions & great value for money on the set 5pm menu. Would definitely go back.’ Rating 4/5

£18.95 for 3 courses on set menu

The seafood dishes are always popular at Mia.

The Mumbai Mansion

250 Morrison Street, Haymarket, Edinburgh, EH3 8DT

Mumbai Mansion offers a contemporary take on Indian cuisine in its spacious, bright, exposed brick interior.

Overlooking the bustle of Haymarket, the kitchen aims to broaden the definition of Indian cooking. This comes through not just in the venison, monkfish and lobster which are used. That ambition is also there in the subtle, clever use of spicing, rubs and marinades.

There is a selection of familiar curries on the menu but, for the full experience, the different tasting menus are a must.
