All being well, the Atlantic Bar and Brasserie should open its doors to the public on Glasgow’s St Vincent Place today.

It sits on the lower ground floor at number 12-16 St Vincent Place. It is below The Anchor Line, and, like its upstairs neighbour which opened a little over a year ago, Atlantic Bar and Brasserie is also owned by DRG, or Di Maggio’s Restaurant Group.

Empire Exhibition

While The Anchor Line pays homage to the shipping line which operated out of Glasgow in the last century, Atlantic Bar and Brasserie has been inspired by the Empire Exhibition which was held in Bellahouston Park in 1938.

For that event, The Anchor Line shipping company created a ship-shaped French restaurant in the park.

This new venture draws on that heritage and offers a contemporary French brasserie and bar in a glam vintage setting.

Visitors can look forward to admiring the open kitchen, the chef’s table and a gleaming cocktail bar which looks just as swish as the one upstairs.

As well as a menu of modern and classic French dishes, there will be whole chickens and stuffed ham hock joints spit roasted on a rotisserie.

The kitchen also has a Robata grill for delivering dishes with that much sought after barbeque tang.

The 5pm Dining blog is delighted to report that Atlantic Bar and Brasserie serves potatoes roasted in duck fat – a fact which makes us very happy although our cardiologist may not share our delight.

French classics

Speaking personally, this blog scribbler is perfectly happy trying the latest Nordic Japanese fermented fad; we like the current trend for BBQ pig and we’re happy enough with a burger. We like most culinary traditions.

To be honest, there isn’t much we would not scoff. At least once.

However, French food remains our go-to grub. It’s the gastronomic gift that always floats our boat and we are very much looking forward to tucking in our napkin at a table in the Atlantic Bar and Brasserie.

We wish the new venture every success!
