This 5pm Dining blogger was over the moon at the news that Morrisons supermarket is selling oysters at 25p a pop this week.

You need to shell out (?!? I’ll get my coat) about 70p each for them in my local fishmonger and, apparently, they can cost up to a fiver in Harrods.

We love oysters and were shocked, horrified and flabbergasted that two thirds of Brits have never eaten one.

According to the press release, a quarter of people had never tried an oyster as they were perceived to be expensive while 44% of people surveyed by the supermarket said that they didn’t want to waste money on food that they might not like.

How would they know unless they tried it? Although having said that, we’ve always like the Jonathan Swift quote that ‘He was a bold man who first ate an oyster’.

St Valentine's Day

Obviously, Morrisons have timed their price promotion to chime with the run-up to St Valentine’s Day.

Along with avocado, chocolate (seen our fab Scottish chocolate infographic yet?) and figs, oysters are supposed to be an aphrodisiac. Casanova was said to have sluiced down some 50 to 60 of them before setting out for a seduction.

Your blogger has no idea if 50-60 oysters would have any sort of aphrodisiac effect. However, I’m pretty sure that they would slop about in the stomach a fair bit if you made any sudden movements.

And that ain’t sexy whichever way you look at it.

By all means, toddle over to Morrisons and make the most of their oyster offer. At 25 pence a go, it’s a great way to try them out.

Table for two?

However, if it’s romance you are trying to cultivate then we would suggest that a table for two in a good restaurant might be a better idea.

As you might expect, 5pm Dining has gathered all sorts of great dining deals for Valentine meals in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The offers don’t go as low as 25 pence but you don’t need to fork out a fortune for a candle-lit meal.
