Californian food and wine helped put Calistoga on The List's hitlist.
Californian food and wine helped put Calistoga on The List’s hitlist.

The 5pm Dining blog was chuffed to see that Edinburgh’s Calistoga restaurant was recognised and put on a hitlist in the latest List Eating and Drinking Guide.

Tucked away on Rose Street North Lane, it is the sort of place that you have to go find rather than one you will stumble across.

We’re pretty sure that it would be much more widely known if it had a shop front on a main street. It’s worth seeking out.

The List describes it as a ‘laid-back Californian restaurant with excellent food and wine – and a great wine store too’.

It’s a short and neat description which pretty well nails it.

Great 5pm reviews

Calistoga also rates well with 5pm customers who have given it a strong combined score of 4.2/5.

Particularly popular are their Meet the Wine Guy nights where diners can enjoy terrific Cali wines in the company of the people who make them.

The next one is with David Fischer, VP of Ramey Wine Cellars from Healdsburg, Sonoma.

The price will be £59 per person including the tasting, a three course dinner, coffee, a glass of wine with each course and a chance to buy Ramey wines at great prices plus the company and chat of David.

It takes place on Monday 27th June from 7.15pm.

Wine Wednesdays

Calistoga’s Wine Wednesdays also get back underway shortly. The next one is on Wednesday 25th May and features new finds from the recent California Wine Trade Tasting in London.

Places are free on a first come first served, so email or call Calistoga.

The tasting starts promptly at 6pm on May 25th and lasts no more than one hour. No wine knowledge is required but it is a big help if you like wine.

Alternatively, simply book in with 5pm and enjoy a meal at Calistoga. The menus change regularly but typical main courses might be the Zinfandel braised beef with truffle mash and polenta purée or the American Pale Ale-battered coley with pea purée, seasonal vegetables and butter sauce.
