As we noted a couple of weeks back, the latest edition of The List Eating and Drinking Guide is in the shops.

One of its most popular features is the hitlist, a select band of restaurants, bars and cafés which, according to the Guide’s writers and researchers, stand out from their peers.

We thought we would take a peak at those which are 5pm Dining members and highlight the offers they are running.

First up we have the Bistros and Brasseries section from the Edinburgh half of the Guide.

Galvin Brasserie de Luxe

Part of the Waldorf Astoria -The Caledonian, Galvin Brasserie de Luxe is a chic brasserie which opened in 2012 under the umbrella of Chris and Jeff Galvin.

The Galvins are chef brothers whose London-based group of restaurants has caught the eye of the Michelin inspectors. Their Edinburgh brasserie has a Michelin Bib Gourmand, indicating ‘good food at affordable prices’.

You can see what the Michelin man means by this if you book in through 5pm. £16 will get you two courses on the seasonal menu plus an aperitif.

Typical dishes might be the corn-fed chicken, Tarbais beans, Alsace bacon and grilled Taleggio followed by blackberry and vanilla cheesecake with cranberry compote.

If you want to splash out a bit more then you might choose to investigate the crustacea bar which is always swimming in Berwick brown crab, lobster, langoustines and Cumbrae oysters.

Monteiths

Quietly tucked away off the Royal Mile, Monteiths is a cosmopolitan cocktail bar and kitchen.

It may be in the heart of Edinburgh’s tourist trail but this is no tartan trap. The ingredients for the regularly changing seasonal menus are very carefully sourced and put together.

Popular main courses on the current spring a la carte include pan-roasted cod with clams, caper beurre blanc and samphire or the venison loin with pistachio crust, grilled leek and smoked beetroot.

Dry-aged for a minimum of 35 days, the Scottish steaks are something of a speciality. They are served with duck fat chips.

Book in through 5pm and you can enjoy a 15% discount on the a la carte menu.
