If Alice in Wonderland fell down a rabbit hole and ended up in Glasgow, we’re pretty sure she’d go to The Mad Platter. The quirky West End Cafe has character in spades, and fits perfectly with Great Western Road’s bohemian scene. Here’s five reasons we think you should pay it a visit.

The Food

The Mad Platter Glasgow

Hearty and homemade are the two words that best describe the food at The Mad Platter. You’ll see the word homemade appear on the menu often, from the burger to the soup to the peppered mackerel, hot chocolate, and lemonade. Priority is given to local producers; the bacon served with the French toast from Ayrshire, the coffee Glasgow based Deer Green Coffee, and Stornaway black pudding included in the breakfast. Their menu covers all day breakfasts, soups and sandwiches, main dishes, desserts and sharing platters. So whether you’re tucking into The Mad Platter’s big cooked breakfast or sharing their charcuterie over a glass of wine with a friend, you’ll be just as catered to.

The Atmosphere

The Mad Platter takes its reference to Alison In Wonderland literally, with top hats, bowlers, an old school post box and chandelier made with vintage crockery and decanters dotted around the cafe. The cosy feel and quirky decor is a million miles away from a corporate coffee chain. 5pm users have noted the welcoming ambience, with recent reviews stating “This wee place is cosy and friendly” and “The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the whole experience was very enjoyable” and “Fantastic atmosphere in this unique restaurant.” Live music on a Thursday evening adds to the warm ambience.

The Location

Located on Great Western Road between Kelvinbridge and St George’s Cross subway stations, The Mad Platter is surrounded by eclectic independent businesses, like Lupe Pinto’s Mexican deli, Timorous Beasties design and El Baraka Middle Eastern supermarket. The huge windows and outdoor seating make it an ideal spot to people watch and soak up the colourful neighbourhood.

The Setting

Is The Mad Platter a bar, a restaurant or a cafe? It really is all three, with a cafe ambience, restaurant dishes, and later weekend opening hours and alcohol lending it a bar vibe in the evening. Think of continental Europe where places open all day for food, wine, sitting outside, and whatever else you feel like. Ideal for when you’d like a drink but fancy a more relaxing environment than the pub.
