Anstruther Harbour Festival

It’s a busy time of year for festivals of all stripes, including those with a strong food and drink element. Next weekend, Fyne Fest, The Scottish Juniper Festival and Crail Food Festival all take place.

Of course, the mother of them all, the Royal Highland Show is limbering up for its launch on the 23rd of June.

Until then, we can all whet our appetite at the Anstruther Harbour Festival which takes place in the Fife coastal town this Saturday and Sunday.

Fishing was once a major part of the town’s economic  make-up and this is reflected in the fair with exhibits like the Reaper, a 71 foot drifter fishing boat. A below deck exhibition unveils the secrets of the herring industry.

Those seeking a few more thrills may prefer to buckle up for a coastal dash along the East Neuk coast on the Osprey rigid inflatable.

Fisherman’s Larder

Saturday’s entertainment ends with a fireworks display at 10.30pm while rockabilly band Uncle Red will bring the entire event to a raucous close with a free gig in the main marquee on the pier from 7pm on the Sunday night.

Before then, visitors can browse the local food and drink stalls at the Anster Fair on the harbourfront and, on the Saturday, you can watch Jim Knox perform his Fisherman’s Larder seafood demonstrations.

The full programme is here.

The Kitchen Café

In other news, your correspondent will be blethering on Radio Scotland's Kitchen Café show this afternoon from 1.30pm.

The topic of conversation is ‘How to complain in restaurants’ and I’ll be on with Carina Contini whose recently opened Cannonball Bar was covered in Tuesday’s 5pm Dining blog.
