Liberte

Au revoir, Black Sparrow.

It seems that the Bukowski-themed bar and kitchen on North Street has heard its final dawn chorus.

Say ‘Bonjour’ to its replacement, Liberté Bar and Bistro.

It is owned and operated by Suzanne & Jim McLaughlin who also have Yesbar on Drury Street.

Famously, Yesbar started life as Vesbar but changed its name to reflect the pro-independence stance of its owners.

Vive la revolution!

Liberté Bar and Bistro keeps the revolutionary theme going.

Adopting the ‘Liberté, égalité and fraternité’ slogan of the French Revolution, the menu at Liberté Bar and Bistro celebrates the Auld Alliance.

The majority of the menu reads like a greatest hits from the French bistro/brasserie repertoire. From the French onion soup to the crème brulée, all the familiar dishes are there.

Diners could opt for a simple moules marinière followed by boeuf Bourguignon or push the bateau out and order the lobster frites.

There is also a £10 prix fixe menu which offers a three course meal of the moment.

While most of the kitchen’s output would not look out of place on the Left Bank of the Seine, there are one or two dishes which indicate that the menu was designed by someone who is not afraid to stick their tongue in their cheek.

See you, Bonne Prince Jimmy

The Bonnie Prince Jimmy burger, deep-fried Mars Bar and frites et fromage side order give a very Glasgow take on the Auld Alliance.

Apparently, there will be lots of pavement seating at the front of the restaurant for those who want to make like our French cousins and dine en plein air.

There will be launch parties on Friday and Saturday night from 8pm. DJs, cocktails and fine French wine have been mentioned.

Potential guests are invited to register.

Liberté Bar and Bistro will be on 5pm Dining very shortly and, when it is, we will link to their 5pm entry.
