Fancy a beer? The Hippo Taproom have one or two. Or 80.

We have lots of lovely new Glasgow restaurants on 5pm Dining.

Say hello to:

The Hippo Taproom

A funky basement bar on Sauchiehall Street, The Hippo Taproom is an independent craft beer bar. With exposed brick walls and a soundtrack of alternative, indie, blues and soul – plus the occasional live act – it is a cool and casual hangout with an underground vibe in all senses of the word.

Beer is king at The Hippo Taproom and the food menu is designed to complement their extensive range of brews. Small appetites may want to snack on honey and chipotle glazed chicken wings, grilled chorizo tostados or loaded nachos.

Hungrier visitors may wish to explore the more substantial main courses, many of which have a distinct Mexican flavour.

The build your own burritos are popular while the Hippo Burger and the pulled pork bun, especially with chorizo salt fries on the side, get the thumbs up from the staff. The staff are more than happy to recommend beers to match with your food.

The 5pm Dining offers will change regularly but two people can book in tomorrow and enjoy two courses from the main menu for £12.

Porter and Rye

Dry-aged steak is the name of the game at Porter & Rye.
Dry-aged steak is the name of the game at Porter & Rye.

Part of the Finnieston strip of Argyle Street, Porter & Rye is one of the chic and hip restaurants which have been responsible for the area’s burgeoning culinary reputation over the last few years.

Intimate and flatteringly dimly lit, it has a stylish decor that is half old school Manhattan steak house and half post-industrial warehouse.

It is a small space which is cleverly split between the bar and dining areas on the ground floor and mezzanine level. Rockabilly and early rock ‘n’ roll keep the atmosphere lively and the extensive offering of innovative cocktails and esoteric bourbons don’t hurt either.

Porter & Rye carefully source the finest Scotch beef and dry age it in-house for a minimum of 50 days, sometimes up to 120 days. This beef is available in several cuts, some designed for sharing, and served with sides, sauces and the customer’s choice of steak knife.

The 5pm Dining offers will change but two people can book in tomorrow and make the most of a 20% discount on the a la carte menu plus tea and coffee.

Birdtree and Bellfish

Taking its name from the symbols on Glasgow’s coat of arms, Birdtree and Bellfish offers an updated take on traditional Scottish hospitality.

Part of the Lorne Hotel on Sauchiehall Street, it is a cosy, homely space with an open fire and two bars: one cocktail bar and one trad Scottish pub.

The chefs at Birdtree & Bellfish deliver classic Scottish home-style cooking with a modern flourish. It is the sort of food that your granny might cook if she watched MasterChef.

We loved this review left by a 5pm Dining customer. We have edited it for length:

‘Glesga Greatness. We were delighted to find a restaurant that serves real Scottish food where they say ‘every dish tells a story’ and ingredients are 95% locally sourced. The menu had delights such as Josie’s cheesy beano to Irn Bru fish & chips. All dishes sounded mouth watering and our biggest issue was what to choose. For ‘afore’ we opted for delicious piping hot Cullen skink and also the wood pigeon with black pudding, both went down a treat. For our ‘Mains’ we had a truly scrumptious Buckie (yes Buckie!) & venison burger… The sea bass kedgeree was cooked to perfection and had a nice little kick to it… from the ‘Efters’ menu, we opted for the stunning cheeseboard and the Cranachan which was yummy goodness… With friendly staff and a beautiful restaurant serving lush food this wee gem is sure to thrive in Glasgow. Looking forward to our return visit.’

The 5pm Dining offers will change on a regular basis. However, two people can book in tomorrow and benefit from a 20% discount on the a la carte menu.

Chequers Bar and Grill is on Sauchiehall Street, between Pitt and Douglas streets.

Specialising in Scottish steaks and seafood, it is smartly decked out in a cream, silver and black colour scheme. Cosy booth seating at the back of the restaurant gives way to window tables with great views of the ever changing Sauchiehall Street life.

The chefs at Chequers Bar and Grill are proud to use the finest Scottish produce on their menus and they present it artfully.

Isle of Mull scallops, Ayrshire ham and Shetland mussels all leap out from the page. At the heart of the menu are the steaks and the seafood. Chequers Bar and Grill offers several cuts of steak including a Chateaubriand and cote de boeuf designed for sharing.

As well as Loch Fyne oysters, there is organic Shetland salmon – available grilled or smoked in-house – plus options like the whole, baked plaice landed at Peterhead.
