The Olympics launch in Rio today and, to mark the event, the 5pm Dining blog is going to sprint, or rather stroll, to our nearest Brazilian restaurant and order a large caipirinha cocktail.

We may also test our athletic abilities by tackling a rodizio or churrascaria – the South American equivalent of an eat all you want BBQ.

If you want to go for gold at your local Brazilian or Latin American restaurant then 5pm Dining makes it very easy.

Easy booking with 5pm Dining

You can browse and book our Brazilian restaurants here and a wider selection of South American restaurants here.

The offers available will change from day to day but we liked the look of the 20% discount on a la carte dishes which is being offered this evening if you book into Boteco do Brazil in Glasgow via 5pm.

At the other end of the city centre, on Sauchiehall Street, Mango is also offering a 20% discount on an la carte evening meal as well as three tapas for £6 between 3pm and 6pm today. Book via 5pm here.

Other Glasgow options include Las Iguanas where the dishes on offer include xinxim. Tricky to say after a couple of Mojitos, it is a dish of chicken in a crayfish in a creamy lime and peanut sauce with spring onion and garlic rice, fine green beans, a sprinkling of coconut farofa and sweet plantains.

Las Iguanas Edinburgh offers a similar menu of Latin American flavours.

Also in Edinburgh, Zico’s Grill Bar on Morrison Street offers the full churrascaria experience. If the idea of tucking into sausages, chicken wrapped in bacon, lamb, pork loin, chicken hearts and several cuts of beef appeals then click here.

Salsa dancing

Meanwhile, in Stockbridge, Sabor Criollo rocks a Venezuelan and Mexican menu. Book in for options like the pabellón criollo – a Venezuelan dish made with shredded beef, simmered black beans, rice and fried plantains.

On Lothian Street, right by the Fringe hub of George Square, there is another branch of Boteco do Brasil.

Both branches of Boteco do Brasil and Mango run packed schedules of live music, salsa dancing and club nights. Rio may be rather far away but it’s easy to find a fiesta in Edinburgh or Glasgow.
