The Corner House has opened in Kilwinning.
The Corner House has opened in Kilwinning.

Lots of new openings taking place or in the pipeline for Glasgow and surrounding area. Say hello to The Corner House, Pizza Punks, a new Paesano Pizza, VDeep West and a second Banana Leaf.

The Buzzworks team are not ones to rest on their laurels.

The latest addition to their empire is The Corner House on Howgate in Kilwinning.

Many moons ago, the premises housed the Stag and Hound. After a £750k refurbishment, we’re sure it would be completely unrecognisable to any old Stag and Hound regulars.

All day dining

As well as a private dining room, the new bar restaurant has a 100 cover dining room and offers all day eating and drinking.

You could nip in for a quick breakfast of porridge with cream and heather honey or take your time over The Buzz Works breakfast: eggs of your choice: poached, fried or scrambled; Robertson’s dry cured bacon, pork sausage, tomato, mushroom, potato scone, haggis, black pudding, beans and toast.

In the evenings, the extensive menu offers everything from a simple soup of the day to 21-day aged Scotch steaks via a selection of burgers; seafood sharing platters and house faves such as the trad steak and ale pie, three cheese macaroni and the gratin of king prawn and smoked haddock.

The Corner House is open seven days a week from 9am to midnight.

Pizza revolution

Back in Glasgow, the city’s pizza coup is gathering pace.

Pizza Punks – a new concept from the team behind the Bar Sobas – is reported to be launching on Friday 16th September.

The new operation is launching in the heart of the Burger Boulevard strip on St Vincent Street.

Will Pizza Punks overcome the burger hegemony? Watch this space.

Certainly there have been more pizza openings than burger launches in the last few months.

The Paesano Pizza guys are also expanding. Having rocked Miller Street, they have announced plans to advance on the West End with an opening planned for early 2017.

Unconfirmed rumour has it that the new branch will be in the former Costa Coffee on Great Western Road.

VDeep heads West

They aren’t the only ones. We understand that VDeep are also opening on Great Western Road, in the former Squid and Whale premises.

The curry and craft brew outlet has been quite the hit in Edinburgh’s Leith over the last eighteen months or so.

Given Glasgow’s love of a good curry, we imagine that popularity will only be repeated on the other side of the M8.

And finally, the Chinese/Malaysian Banana Leaf is expanding from their Cambridge Street base to open on Byres Road.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes them all every success.
