Having opened a branch in Partick earlier this year, the brewers Six Degrees North have expanded again and launched in Edinburgh.

With a strong presence in the Marine Hotel in Stonehaven and a Six Degrees North branded bar in Aberdeen, the new venue on Howe Street brings the Six Degrees North estate to four bars.

The new venture is housed in the former Mother’s Bar premises. A major refit has given the place a simple, clean design with the bar providing a strong focal point.

There is a massive 40 taps on the bar and the ever changing line-up of Six Degrees North beers plus numerous guest beers will keep any hop head happy.

We are happy to be corrected but we think that Six Degrees North’s 40 taps mans that it is the bar with the widest range of keg beers in the capital?

Hundreds of Belgian beers

Down stairs,  in one°below, the bottle cellar has hundreds of Belgian beers so, if you fancy a Gouden Carolus Tripel or a Super des Fagnes Bruin, you know where to go.

The menu centres on ‘petits plats de cuisine a la bière Belgique’ which translates as beer-friendly choices which can be served as snack/tapas portions or as main meals.

Typical choices might be the Toulouse sausage with root veg mash or the steamed Shetland mussels cooked in Wanderlust wheat beer, cream and garlic.

If you have more of a sweet tooth then options include a Belgian chocolate brownie, an apple tart Tatin and a sticky pear and carrot pudding.

Alternatively, you could tuck into the Scottish cheeseboard which, of course, is served with an ale chutney.

More than beer

While beer is at the heart of the new Six Degrees North, you won’t go thirsty if ale doesn’t float your boat.

There is a short but carefully chosen wine list and a good mix of rum, bourbon, tequila, vodka and whisky.

They also stock some twenty odd gins which can be served in gin flights and in one litre carafes which contain eight shots and a mixer.

For example, the Gin Mare carafe contains eight measures of Gin Mare, basil and Fevertree Mediterranean Tonic.
