Revolucion de Cuba: bringing the fiesta to the city centre.
Revolucion de Cuba: bringing the fiesta to the city centre.

The 5pm Dining blog is beginning to wind down for Christmas but not before we’ve polished off the last of the new openings in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Last weekend saw the launch of Revolucion de Cuba in Culzean House on Glasgow’s Renfield Street.

Billed as a ‘rum bar and cantina’, it promises a ‘taste of the tropics’ in the form of ‘an impressive array of cocktails, worldly rums and freshly prepared, Latin-inspired dishes’. Live music and plenty of dancing are also on the cards.

Hamburgers, paella, enchiladas, burritos and a reasonable selection of tapas form the backbone of the food menu.

Cauliflower wings

The one dish that leapt off the menu were the cauliflower wings. These are cauli florets fried in a mojito batter with a goat cheese and honey sauce plus a smoky tomato salsa.

They may be utterly delicious – we don’t know, haven’t tasted them – but we admire the chefs’ dedication to helping the nation consume its five-a-day veggie portions.

Even if it means disguising an innocent cauliflower in a cocktail-flavoured batter, deep-frying it and then serving it with a sweet sauce and a smoky salsa. Calling them ‘wings’ will fool no-one.

The cocktail list is extensive. We are big fans of groan-inducing puns so we will give you the details of the suitably festive Elf and Safety.

Made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, Cointreau, pineapple, cranberry and vanilla, it should help loosen the old hips for the salsa dancing.

The bigger picture

Moving to the other side of the M8, Wetherspoon have opened their latest superpub in Edinburgh.

The Caley Picture House has opened at the foot of Lothian Road in the B-listed building which was, until 2013, one of the capital’s few live music venues.

Before that it had been various nightclubs, cinemas and, originally, way back in the 19th century, a hotel.

Finally, we see that Kim’s Bulgogi has opened on St Stephen Street next to the venerable Bill’s Diner.

It’s a stripped back Korean place that seems focused on takeaway but has some table seating. We have yet to dip our fork in their kimchi but we are hearing enthusiastic reports about their bibimbap.

We would give you their url but the one on their marketing bumf links to a Korean joint in Suffolk.
