Kowloon Bar and Kitchen has launched in the Southside.

As we mentioned a few months back, the people behind Dumbarton Road’s Dumpling Monkey and Mamafubu on Glassford Street have been planning a Southside outlet.

Kowloon Bar and Kitchen is now open at 72 Nithsdale Street.

It’s in the building that previously housed The Salisbury.

Although it is billed as a Chinese restaurant and takeaway, the menu dips into several Asian cuisines.

Pan-Asian dishes at Kowloon Bar and Kitchen

If you fancy Thai red curry, Japanese katsu curry, Singapore fried rice or a range of udon noodle dishes then Kowloon can sort you out.

The menu is not as extensive nor, I would suggest, as adventurous as that at Glassford Street.

There is no salted fish in pork mince patty here. Nor will you sit in the Nithsdale Street restaurant and wonder if you will ever be brave enough to try the tripe in black bean sauce.

This blogger is sure that the owners know their market.

We guess they have figured that enough city centre customers may be happy to try stewed pork tongue while many in the ‘burbs may be less enthusiastic.

That doesn’t mean that you will struggle to find lots of well-known popular options ay Kowloon Bar and Kitchen.

All the familiar Cantonese favourites are there from pot sticker dumplings and beef in black bean sauce to lemon chicken.

Szechuan dishes

You will also find spicier Szechuan classics such as both kung po chicken and duck on the menu.

King prawns and chilli dominate the seafood section. The lack of a steamed sea bass dish – usually a staple of any Cantonese menu – is a bit of a surprise.

You can wash it all down with bubble tea, green tea or plum juice.

If you would rather something a little stronger, Kowloon offers wines, cocktails and a range of beers that stretches from Birds and Bees by the Williams Bros to Chinese Tsing Tao.

Range of menus

As well as the a la carte menu, there are three and four course banquet options at £12.50 and £15 plus a £7.50 lunch menu which offers a main course and side.

Finally, there is a £10 early dinner menu.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes them every success.
