new restaurant in Kilmarnock New restaurant in Kilmarnock: La Dragon looks chic. Pic: Facebook

La Dragon is a new restaurant in Kilmarnock which opened at the beginning of February.

Located in the restored Mill building on Marnock Street, La Dragon is an Asian restaurant with a pretty jaw-dropping interior.

Apparently, owners Kenny and Josephine Cheung spent a reported £1 million on the restaurant's decor and you can pretty much see where every penny went.

Clever lighting, dark colour tones and the occasional glimpse of gold are all used to give the place a subtle Art Deco look. Put more simply, it looks very glam.

New restaurant in Kilmarnock: Champagne bar

With this in mind, it comes as no surprise to learn that there is a Champagne bar on the ground floor.

As well as ten Champagne and Prosecco options by the bottle and a further four by the glass, the lounge offers cocktails, some 26 gins and a range of afternoon teas.

The various dining areas - including the Emperor Suite private dining space - have a similarly wide selection of menus.

As well as the a la carte, there are table d'hôte menus, Chinese tapas plus a two or three course lunch menu.

The dishes are mainly Chinese with a few forays into the kitchens of nearby cuisines.

Head Chef Jason Chan will happily knock up starters which range from crispy aromatic duck to Thai fish cakes or a classic prawn cocktail.

There are Thai green curries, char siu pork and crispy shredded beef in oyster sauce.

Scottish ingredients

Stand-out Scottish ingredients include Stornoway black pudding with chicken or prawn tempura and West Coast mussels in a black bean sauce or an Asian-style garlic and creamy white wine sauce.

One way to sample a wide range of dishes without exploding would be to order tapas style.

You can choose eight dishes for £24. Typical selections include the salt and chilli ribs, Szechuan mussels and an array of dim sum.

The 5pm Dining blog wishes La Dragon every success.
