5pm Dining has welcomed an exciting new addition – Edinburgh’s Maison Bleue. The Old Town favourite, which has served French, North African, Asian and traditional Scottish cuisine from its striking blue premises since 1998, has garnered a stellar reputation with Edinburgh foodies over the years.
Here’s five reasons why we recommend Maison Bleue.
It’s an ambitious feat but Maison Bleue specialises in French, North African, Asian and Scottish cuisine and does them all very well. The menu is divided into five sections: bouchees, which is French for small bites and are ideal as starters, the steak selection, the main courses which have been on the menu since Maison Bleue opened and are still adored, the tagine section, and the grill section. Such a varied menu may result in a lack of quality but this is not the case at Maison Bleue; each detail of the imaginative dishes is carefully attended to.
Maison Bleue is located in one of the prettiest streets in Edinburgh’s Old Town – Victoria Street, whose pastel coloured buildings, archways and cobblestones were the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. The frontage of Maison Bleue is painted a striking sky blue and the inside has 5th century archways, Victorian stairways and hidden corners, providing an atmospheric ambience in which to dine.
Located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Maison Bleue is perfectly situated for a spot of lunch during a day out in the capital. It is an eight minute walk from Waverley Station and is within walking distance of all the city’s biggest attractions like the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, the National Gallery, the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish Parliament.
On TripAdvisor, Maison Bleue is one of the top rated restaurants in Edinburgh with an average rating of 4.5 from 1315 reviews. The most recent reviews say:
“I have no idea why I have never been here before but will definitely return. The lunch menu was very well priced and the choices were varied enough for our party of four to choose something we all liked the sound of.
The mussels were lovely, the fish of the day was cod on a risotto which was beautifully cooked and tasted superb. The steak frites also went down well.
The staff were courteous and attentive without being noticed.
Great value, great food and the ambience and decor in the place is very warm and welcoming.
5 stars from me.”
“We had friends over for at Patrick’s Day and I had had Maison Bleue recommended by my daughter. We were certainly not let down the party of four. We each had starters and main and each person gave a total satisfaction with their meal. Service excellent wine very good and very reasonable…staff most attentive….would highly recommend a visit.”
