The Saint The bar at The Saint. Maisie the chicken not pictured.

The Saint is a new bar and restaurant with rooms in St Andrews. And it has a novel way of standing out from the crowd.

From fire-breathers to flamenco dancers, new bars will employ all sorts of eye-catching techniques to make a splash.

However, in 25 years of attending new bar and restaurant openings, the launch of The Saint is the only place I can remember that has made a feature of having its own chicken coop.

And perhaps it's a sign of advancing years but fresh eggs for breakfast sounds rather more appealing than a bloke in a mankini juggling with flames.

The Saint: family-friendly

The new South Street venue is from Signature Pubs. The hospitality group runs 23 venues throughout Scotland including The Raven, The Spiritualist and Smokin’ Fox in Glasgow plus Kyloe and Badger & Co. in Edinburgh.

All 23 units are unique and source locally for their food and drink. Having your own chicken coop in the beer garden seems like the next logical step for Signature Pubs.

It's also a clever one. The Saint is aiming for a family-friendly atmosphere and the possibility of seeing Maisie the chicken and her chooks is likely to appeal to little ones. As will the new children's activity area. Naturally, there is also a separate kids' menu.

Of course, there are plenty of classic cocktails, Scottish gins and craft beers for the adults to enjoy. And the extensive beer garden only adds to the appeal; especially given the current weather.

The Saint: all day food

It's an all day food offer. Guests can start the day with a healthy bowl of porridge with fruit compote or you can pimp your porridge with a rather more indulgent dram of whisky.

The lunch and dinner menu offer everything from gnocchi, meatballs and a duck Caesar salad to a range of burgers. The menu also features a selection of The Saint’s pies, served with chips and seasonal vegetables.

On select days of the week, there are special offers. Mussel madness means unlimited mussels and a bottle of wine for £25 while £35 will get a you a Sunday roast for two with all the trimmings plus seasonal crumble and ice cream.

Laura Smith, General Manager, said: 'With such an iconic location, we’re delighted to be opening the newest edition to the vibrant St Andrews area. Our team can’t wait to welcome everyone and showcase what we’ve been working so hard on. We will continue to work with the community to ensure that The Saint has everything they need to be a fun-filled, lively hub to be enjoyed by all.'

The Saint is now open serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks throughout the day from 8am until 10pm.
