At the moment, there can’t be many people in the catering trade who are rubbing their hands with glee and planning to buy a holiday home on Mustique. However, it’s not all doom and gloom out there by any means.

First up, there is this brilliant story, originally from Agence France Presse, about scientists developing space travel curries so that Indian astronauts feel at home when they are in orbit. It’s a sweet tale but whoever came up with the headline ‘One small step for naan’ deserves a medal.

There is a long and noble history of punning curry titles especially when combined with Abba song titles. Tikka Chance On Me and Can You Hear The Drums For Mango are classics of the genre although many prefer Madonna’s early Anglo-Indian single Poppadom Preach.

On a more serious but also upbeat note, it’s reported that Ayrshire’s Buzzworks group has bought Nardini’s at Regatta in Largs out of administration. Formerly the famous Nardini’s caff, the business is up and running again under its new owners. Buzzworks, who already run five popular bars, restaurants and cafes in the area, are said to be planning to revamp the building over the winter season and then re-open it as Scott’s.

Finally, Hummingbird, the G1 Group’s latest Glasgow bar and restaurant, launches today. As mentioned in our earlier Dressing for dinner blog entry, one of Hummingbird’s unique selling points is that they will have bikinis for sale. Given today’s Baltic weather that may be a little optimistic but it’s good to see someone looking forward to sunnier times.
