Last week’s post about the top ten Scottish foods provoked alternative suggestions which ran from Irn Bru and square sausage to, er, Highlander bacon and brown sauce crisps.

The producer of Britain’s Best Dish is hoping to come across other Scottish delicacies when the show holds auditions in Glasgow next month.

‘Whether it’s Arbroath Smokies, Clootie Dumpling, or a beautiful piece of venison, the fantastic produce available to Scotland means we’re sure there’ll be a fantastic variety of dishes to choose from,’ says the series’ producer Putul Verma.

Chefs John Burton Race and Ed Baines and wine expert Jilly Goolden will be coming to City Halls in Glasgow on Saturday May 2 and asking people to pitch their dishes on camera. At this stage, hopefuls won’t be expected to cook their dishes. Instead, they just have to try and tempt the judges into inviting them to a cook off in London at a later date.

Susan Boyle has already proved that Scotland has singing talent. Do we have the amateur cooking skills to match?

Anyone interested in taking part should contact bestdish@itv.com or call 0871 62 66 222.

Those of us who prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals might want to mosey on up to Glasgow’s Gibson Street the recently opened Pars is putting Persian food on the plate.

Alternatively, here are some Glaswegian 5pm members whose menus showcase Middle Eastern and North African flavours: Alla Turca and its downstairs little brother 1 Bistro, Mzouda and Koolba where they are as happy to rustle up a curry as a koobideh lamb kebab.
