New ventures in Glasgow and Edinburgh often seem to come in flurries and when one city is quiet then the other is buzzing. On the new openings front, Glasgow seems to be relatively calm at the moment while Edinburgh is humming with the smell of fresh paint and hopeful expectation.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated arrivals is that of Paul Kitching whose 21212 restaurant is coming together on the former site of the No 3 Royal Terrace restaurant. Kitching won a Michelin star in Juniper, his old Manchester restaurant, and the capital’s dedicated scoffers are on tenterhooks to see what he can do up here. The latest news is that the project is on track to open in mid-May.

More imminently, Café Fish is to open its doors on Monday 27 April. The brand new restaurant is in Leith’s Michelin Mile, the area surrounding The Shore where The Plumed Horse, Martin Wishart’s and The Kitchin all ply their starry trade.

The chef at Café Fish is Virginae Dumon. Her CV includes a spell working under Marco Pierre White. As the name suggests, fish and seafood are at the heart of the menu and there is a strong emphasis on local sourcing. Two courses at dinner are £19.

If you can’t wait that long, then here are a trio of 5pm members who all know their way around a fillet of fish: Agua, Creelers and Skerries.
