There are plenty of niche markets within the food and restaurant trades. From the Stinking Rose restaurant in San Francisco which uses garlic in every dish to the Icelandic taste for rotting shark meat, it seems that there are no stones left unturned when it comes to our curiosity about food.

Still, today’s event at the French Institute in Edinburgh takes the biscuit. “La sauce était presque parfaite, 80 recettes d’après Alfred Hitchcock” is a book by Anne Martinetti, a woman who has written several books on literature and cinema seen through the prism of gastronomy. The title of her latest tome translates as “The sauce was nearly perfect, 80 recipes inspired by Alfred Hitchcock”. Ms Martinetti will be giving a talk on her book at 5pm in the Institute this afternoon. Obviously, a recipe book inspired by Hitchcock runs the risk of being mainstream so the talk will be in French. I like to think that blackbird pie will be in there somewhere.

Actually, the idea is not as obscure as it initially sounds as plenty of actors have made their mark on the food world. While you may not want to get an invite around to Gwyneth Paltrow’s place for a macrobiotic supper, Paul Newman was a dab hand in the kitchen and made millions for charity thanks to his range of salad dressings. Christopher Walken is supposed to be a whizz in the kitchen. Here he is cooking chicken with pears.
