A new survey from the seafood industry promoters Seafish has arrived at the less than startling conclusion that people think of fish as a summery dish.

While this news is on a par with the idea that bears often use the woods to relieve themselves, the report did throw up some more interesting facts. Just under a third of the people questioned reckoned that they were most likely to have seafood when eating out at a restaurant this summer while almost a quarter (23%) percent said they would eat fish when at the seaside.

The most arresting factoid was that the taste for fish seems to increase as we become older. Almost twice as many over-55 year olds eat fish compared with 16 to 24 year olds (18% vs. 12%). The fewer 16 to 24 year olds eating seafood, the better, at least as far as I am concerned, as it means all the more for me.

Yesterday, I engaged in hand to claw battle with a seafood platter that included crab from North Berwick, West Coast lobster, spoots, oysters, prawns, mussels, smoked salmon, cockles and some Smokie. It was all fab but I don’t think I will need to eat again until Wednesday.

5pm has quite a haul of restaurants specialising in seafood. In Edinburgh, Agua, Skerries and The Tower will put a fish on your dish. Glasgow fish-lovers can count on the Bouzy Rouge Seafood and Grill, Gamba, Gandolfi Fish, the Mussel Inn, Rogano, the Chippy Doon The Lane, Yo Sushi and the multiple manifestations of the Two Fat Ladies.
