The Festival may be about to steamroll its way into Edinburgh but Glaswegian diners (and Edinburgh people keen to escape the madness) can look forward to August’s Gourmet Glasgow festival.

Now in its seventh year, the festival is designed to show Glasgow’s restaurants at their best. Run by the Glasgow Restaurateurs Association, the festival starts on Monday and features a full plate of special menus, gourmet dinners and Dinearound offers.

Among the highlights are the The Auchentoshan Whisky Festival which is taking place on the 29th of August; a seafood week (11-15 Aug) at An Lochan restaurant and John Quigley is holding a wine and local produce dinner at his Red Onion restaurant on the 27th of August. Café Andaluz will be running a Celebrate Scotland menu throughout the month.

Likely to be popular are the Dinearound deals offered by participating restaurants. These offer set price meals starting at £15 and include a free dram from the festival’s sponsors Auchentoshan.

Three restaurateurs have been either very brave or foolhardy and have invited food journalists to come and be Maitre D’ at their restaurants. The events are called the Food Critics Challenge Evenings and all the proceeds go to charity. The Daily Record’s Tam Cowan will be bantering with the diners at The Grill on the Corner on Monday 3rd of August while I’ll be mixing up the orders at the Two Fat Ladies on Blythswood Street on Monday 24th August. The Herald’s Ron Mackenna is also said to be leafing through his reservations book and we’ll let you know when he is booked in.
