It’s all kicking off on the afternoon tea front with two heavyweights of the cake stand scene squaring off to one another.

In the red corner, the Exchange Bar at the Sheraton in Edinburgh has launched its Shades of Summer afternoon tea offer at £16.95. Running until the end of August, this limited edition tea includes a selection of fruity seasonal sweets such as a cherry liquor butter cream slice, strawberry tartlet, summer fruit and basil jelly and banana cake. If afternoon tea doesn’t appeal then check the hotel’s Santini restaurant for 5pm deals.

Over in the blue corner, the Caledonian Hilton has enlisted the help of one thousand  Baxterbears® for a month long teddy bear’s tea party as part of the Edinburgh Festival. Apparently, Baxterbear will be holding readings of his swashbuckling memoirs between 2pm and 3pm each day during the festival.

After each reading, the hotel is running a Baxterbear® Afternoon Tea in the Pompadour Restaurant.  Fans will be treated to a menu of rather sophisticated sarnies such as Isle of Skye smoked salmon, peeled cucumber and peppered cream cheese and sweet treats such as pistachio cream cake and scones with clotted cream and jam.

The Baxterbear afternoon tea is £19.95 per person and the Celebration Baxterbear Afternoon Tea, which includes a glass of champagne is £24.95. Kids Afternoon Tea is £7.50. One free Baxterbear for parties of up to four is included.
