New eating out options are sprouting up in Edinburgh faster than mime acts on the Royal Mile.

On Commercial Street, Budapest reckons that it’s the first Hungarian restaurant in Scotland. Their prototype menu features starters such as spicy chicken wings with a cheese sauce and liver dumpling soup while main courses include a lamb goulash and rose roasted duck breast.

To be honest, their menu needs some work. ‘Steamed cauliflower and broccoli with boiled egg and vinegrette sauce’ may be delicious but that description isn’t selling it. The same could be said for ‘stewed codfile with sour cream noodles topped with cottege cheese’.

On Forrest Road, the Fat Cow Pub has started trading in the old Masonic Hall while on Holyrood Road the Foodiebox Hampers company has opened a cafe in the former Beanscene site.

Having flourished on Broughton Street for a couple of years, the Bakehouse Company café has opened a new branch on Victoria Street.

In Glasgow, the opening of The Two Figs on Byres Road has been delayed until Friday.
