There are a lot of new places springing up or on the verge of opening. Earlier this week, we mentioned Platillos, a just opened joint on Edinburgh’s Hanover Street which is serving Mexican street food. At the moment they are running a fairly restricted menu that doesn’t deviate too far from the sort of dishes that you would expect to see in any Mexican restaurant in Britain. However, the owners are going to take a walk on the wild side and gradually introduce a few more authentic dishes which they hope won’t scare off their more cautious customers.

At the moment, their menu consists of things like the chalupas or tortilla cakes with chipotle mushrooms; meatballs in a smoked chile sauce and mancha mantels which is pork with pineapple and sweet potato in an ancho chile sauce.

Other Mexican options include 5pm members such as La Cantina in Leith and Tex Mex II on Thistle Street.

In Glasgow, we are awaiting confirmation of a new venture from one of the city’s curry heavyweights. We’ll fill in the details as soon as we get them. Hopefully next week.

In other news, the charming team behind The Left Bank bar and restaurant are hard at work on their new venture on Byres Road. Called The Two Figs, they hope to have it open next Tuesday which is when we’ll post more details.

Finally, The Hub Café Bar is a new place which is serving all the bright, young creative types in Glasgow’s new media quarter on Pacific Quay. Situated in The Hub, it serves sarnies, soups and traybakes but is looking to extend its menu and its opening hours as it establishes itself. It enjoys rather stunning views across the Clyde.
