Apparently, you learn something new every day. If you have ever spent much time in front of daytime TV then you might suspect that that is not always true. However, I did learn something from a recent press release from the makers of Quaker Oats.

As part of their marketing schedule, they have designated the period between September and March as the official porridge eating season. So far so predictable but much more interesting was the fact that sales of oats increase massively in the run-up to Ramadan.

Because Muslims are supposed to fast during the daylight hours of Ramadan, the sales of oats soar as Muslims seek out foods which slowly release their energy over the course of the day. Ramadan takes place at the end of August/beginning of September this year so porridge manufacturers have been enjoying an out of season bonus.
