Stock up your cheese at the French Market
Stock up your cheese at the French Market

The eighth Merchant City Festival gets underway tomorrow and, as well as more arts events than you can shake a plectrum at, there is also plenty on offer for those of us whose stomach comes high on our list of life’s priorities.

The French street market in Candleriggs returns with more French producers selling everything from fromage to crafts. This year, Italy is getting in on the act with the Mamma Mia Italian Market which is setting out its stalls on Wilson Street.

Many of the 5pm members in the area are running Merchant City Festival discounts. Cafe India, Dakhin, the Dhabba, The Gate, Koolba, Metropolitan, Piazza Italia and from the G1 Group, Corinthian, Arta, Committee Room 9 and Social are taking part.

Gandolfi Fish is running a special menu of wine and seafood pairings on Sunday and we hear that Cafe Gandolfi will be hosting the city’s first pop-up bar over the weekend. More on that later.

I’m booked in to see comedian Kevin Bridges at the Old Fruitmarket tomorrow night. He has yet to celebrate his 25th birthday but in terms of Scottish comedians most likely to do a Frankie Boyle, I reckon that Mr Bridges is your man.
