It’s probably taken me about a year longer than anyone else to come around to the idea but I’m realising that Twitter is actually a pretty good way to review food and drink. The miniscule word count means you have to keep it pithy and, unlike many a traditional review, it can’t afford to stray off subject.

Giles Coren’s review of The Criterion in The Times a few weekends back is pretty entertaining on the subject.

All of which is a wordy and far too long to twitter way of coming around to say that I’m taking part in a whisky tasting twitter from 7pm tonight at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Vaults in Leith. It is part of a simultaneous tasting which is also taking place at the Soc’s branch on Queen Street in Edinburgh and its venue on Greville Street in London.

The whiskies we will be trying are:

  • Highland Island 4.131  An Artists’ Retreat
  • Speyside Spey 37.41  Mouth-nummmb-ing
  • Highland Island 121.30 Crispy aromatic duck and Waldorf salad.
  • Islay 10.68 Blackpool rock in an ashtray

As you can see from the descriptions, the Society’s members like to let their minds travel some considerable distance when pondering what’s in their glasses.

More knowledgeable whisky heads than mine will be helping run the tasting. Olaf Meier of the SMWS and Lucas from the Edinburgh Whisky Blog will be at The Vaults while experts from The Spectator will be at the London bash.

Feel free to follow that tasting and ask any whisky questions you like of the experts.
